Amsterdam, June 26 (IANS) Teenage midfielder Jorrit Croon was the surprise inclusion in the 16-member Netherlands hockey squad announced for the Rio Olympics in August on Sunday.
The 17-year-old HGC player has played in just four matches for the Netherlands. "This is so special. Unbelievable. Especially because it is unexpected; I really do not see it coming," Croon said in the Dutch hockey website.
The selection consists of sixteen players and two substitutes. The team will be captained by 2015 World Player of the Year Robert van der Horst.
The side includes established players like Robbert Kemperman, Billy Bakker, Valentin Verga and Mink van der Weerden, Bob de Voogd, Jeroen Hertzberger, Rogier Hofman and goalkeeper Jaap Stockmann.
Apart from Croon, youngsters in the squad are Mirco Pruyser, Seve van Ass, Hidde Turkstra, Glenn Schuurman and Sander Baart.
Roel Bovendeert, Jelle Galema, Bjorn Kellerman and Joep de Mol fell last players off and are not part of the Olympic selection.
Goalkeeper Pirmin Blaak and striker Constantijn Jonker are designated as substitutes.
The Netherlands finished runners-up four years ago in the London Olympic Games.
