TOKYO, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Host Japan qualified for the quarterfinals of men's Olympic football tournament with a perfect record after defeating France 4-0 on Wednesday.
Real Madrid's Takefusa Kubo opened the scoresheet by scoring his 3rd goal of the tournament before his teammates netted three more to send the French side packing.
Mexico beat South Africa 3-0 and rank second after Japan in Group A.
In Group B, South Korea staged a landslide victory with 6-0 against Honduras and topped the group with 6 points.
New Zealand, who surprised the South Koreans in the first match, drew 0-0 with Romania and earned a place in the last eight with an advantage in goal differences.
In Group C, Argentina was eliminated after drawing group leader Spain 1-1.
Egypt, ranked last in the group before the last match, snatched another spot for qualification in the group after a 2-0 win against Australia.
In Group D, Germany became another big name that stormed out of the tournament after a dismal 1-1 draw with Cote d'Ivoire, who qualified in second place along with defending champion Brazil.
The quarterfinals will be held on Saturday featuring Japan vs New Zealand, Spain vs Cote d'Ivoire, South Korea vs Mexico, and Brazil vs Egypt.
